What happens if you resist arrest? And still scape?

My friend was caught shoplifting at target and he got caught the police came and were checking his pockets and they found weed and then when they were about to handcuff him he jerked his hand around and ran the police were chasing him but he jumped a fence and they lost him, the police asked me if I knew where he went and I said I don't know idk for how long they searched for him since I left, later that day my friend called me and told me he didn't got caught but he was nervous I just wanted to know what's gonna happen if he gets caught? How much jail time? Thanks.
